Montana GOP Senate candidate Steve Daines raised $1.2 million in the first quarter of 2014, his campaign told POLITICO, outraising incumbent Democratic Sen. John Walsh.
Walsh, by comparison, brought in $947,000 in the first three months of the year, his campaign announced earlier this week.
Daines also has a bigger war chest than Walsh: The Republican congressman has more than $2.2 million on hand, compared with just shy of $700,000 on hand for Walsh.
The first-quarter numbers were a big test of how much Walsh’s candidacy will be helped by his newfound Senate incumbency; appointed to the Senate in February to replace Democrat Max Baucus, this was Walsh’s first quarter as an incumbent. His haul was a significant increase over previous quarters: He had only raised $583,000 in the fourth quarter of 2013, for example.
But the fact that Daines outraised him means it’s likely Walsh will be playing catch-up to Daines for the rest of the year.
