Lee Newspapers: Daines calls for resignation of VA secretary over allegations of deadly delays for care

HELENA — U.S. Rep. Steve Daines, R-Mont., on Wednesday called for the resignation of Veteran Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, citing reports of VA hospitals hiding delays in treatment that led to the deaths of veterans awaiting services.

“Our nation’s veterans deserve the best, and when our nation fails to deliver, our veterans deserve answers,” he said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the VA has yet to adequately address the problems and lack of accountability plaguing several VA health centers.”

Daines said he also met recently with a group of Bozeman-area veterans, who raised concerns about “persistent delays” in receiving health care from the VA system.

The nation’s largest veterans group, the American Legion, and Concerned Veterans for America this week said Shinseki should resign.
