New Ad Highlights Daines’ Work for Montana Veterans

BOZEMAN, Mont. – In a new television ad released today by the Steve Daines for Montana campaign, Montana veteran George Blackard speaks out about Steve Daines’ work to right injustices faced by Montana veterans.

Blackard, a U.S. Navy veteran and Billings resident, shares how Steve Daines successfully worked to reverse a Department of Veterans’ Affairs policy that resulted in numerous deceased veterans being denied VA-issued grave markers at the Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery.

“We had a situation where deceased veterans were denied grave markers at our cemetery. That’s an injustice and it should never happen,” Blackard says. “Steve Daines was one of the first people in Washington D.C. to speak out. He took swift action. He got a commitment from the VA to fix that problem.”

Blackard commends Daines’ commitment to Montana’s veterans, and describes how Daines is fighting to do things “the right way” in Washington.

“Working with Steve Daines showed me that things can still be done the right way. If he tells you he’s going to help you, he does everything he can to help you,” Blackard continues. “I trust Steve Daines to do what’s right for veterans and Montanans.”

Last year, a new VA policy required all veterans headstone applications to come from a direct family member or the deceased veteran—making it difficult for veterans organizations to request headstones on behalf of homeless veterans.

In October of last year, Daines successfully secured a commitment from the VA that this problem would be fixed.  Daines also cosponsored legislation to amend the new headstone policy, which was ultimately reversed by the VA last year.

The ad, “Injustice,” will air statewide starting today. The full ad may be viewed here.
