BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana timber workers are speaking out about the threats to Montana’s timber industry—and how Steve Daines is fighting for solutions that protect Montana jobs and revitalize Montana’s timber industry.
In “Timber,” a new television ad released today by the Steve Daines for Montana campaign, RY Timber manager Ed Regan and head soft filer Denis Brandon share how frivolous lawsuits filed by fringe environmental groups are placing hundreds of good-paying Montana timber jobs at risk.
“At this mill, there’s a hundred jobs at stake. There’s real people. They’re striving to pay their bills, pay their rent,” Brandon states. “And if we don’t have people like Steve Daines working for us, these saw mills will fail.”
Regan commends Daines’ work to protect Montana timber jobs and grow Montana’s economy, noting that as a job creator and businessman, Daines knows what it takes to get the economy moving.
“Steve Daines is a businessman. He’s a jobs creator. He knows how to get our economy going,” Regan says. “He will get things done for Montana.”
Recently, Montana’s oldest family-owned sawmill, F.H. Stoltze Land & Lumber Co. announced layoffs and a reduction in production hours after a judge ruled in favor of a frivolous job-killing lawsuit brought upon by fringe environmental groups determined to destroy Montana’s timber industry. The sawmill will be forced to lay off 10 hardworking Montana timber employees and reduce production hours from 80 hours to 60 hours per week.
Daines is working on common sense forest management reforms that protect and strengthen Montana’s timber industry, keep Montana forests healthy and will create more than 6,000 good Montana jobs.
Daines helped introduce H.R. 1526, the Restoring Healthy Forests for Healthy Communities Act, which was passed by the House last year with bipartisan support and has received strong backing from Montana county commissioners, timber workers, and several sportsmen and conservation groups, including Montana Outfitters and Guides Association and the Mule Deer Foundation.
